Switchboard upgrades for homes that have outgrown the original board

A newer house can still need a board tidy-up once the load grows. Add a pool pump, ducted air, an induction cooktop and an EV charger and you can run out of breathing room pretty fast.

When the board needs checking

Modern estate homes were built for a certain load. Real life often adds more. Here are the common triggers that mean the switchboard needs a proper look:

  • EV charger install
  • Pool pump going in
  • Ducted aircon addition
  • Induction cooktop
  • Solar battery storage
  • Home office with heavy gear
  • Second fridge in garage
  • Shed or workshop power

The typical Ellenbrook scenario

Family moves into a 2012 estate home. Original board was fine for the original life. Ten years later: EV in the garage, pool out the back, solar on the roof that now needs a battery, ducted air running harder, and the study is now a full home office with three monitors and a desktop.

The board is not broken. It is just full. That is when the conversation about capacity, circuits and protection starts making sense.

What switchboard work involves

Circuit additions

Adding new circuits for EV chargers, pool pumps, sheds, or dedicated appliances when space allows.

Protection upgrades

Upgrading RCDs, adding circuit breakers, or splitting circuits that have been overloaded.

Board expansion

When the existing enclosure is full, fitting a larger board or sub-board to handle more circuits.

Load balancing

Reorganising circuits so the load is spread properly and nothing is overworking.

Labelling and tidy-up

Making sure the board tells a clear story and circuits are properly identified.

Capacity assessment

Checking whether your supply and board can handle what you want to add before committing.

Straight answer, no theatre

If the board is still serviceable I will say so. If it needs more space or a proper rebuild, I will say that too. No upselling for the sake of it. The goal is to make sure your electrical setup can handle the way you actually use your house now, not what the builder planned for ten years ago.

Switchboard questions

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Common signs: no room for new circuits, RCDs tripping frequently, wanting to add an EV charger or pool pump but being told there is no capacity. I can assess your board and tell you straight.

My house is only 10 years old. Would it need a switchboard upgrade?

Sometimes. A 2015 board was built for a 2015 lifestyle. Add an EV charger, ducted air, pool pump, battery storage and a home office and you can run out of space or capacity even in a modern home.

What does a switchboard upgrade involve?

Depends on the situation. Sometimes it is adding circuits and reorganising. Sometimes it needs a larger enclosure or additional protection. I explain exactly what is needed before any work starts.

Can you just add circuits without a full upgrade?

Often yes. If the board has space and the supply can handle the load, adding circuits or upgrading protection may be enough. I check first and recommend the minimum needed.

Send me a photo of your switchboard and tell me what you are trying to add. I will tell you whether you need work or if the board can handle it as-is.
